Introduction

Finland is the seventh largest European nation and it is the second most northerly country in the world. The country is bordered by Norway, Sweden and Russia and has a population of just over 5 million people.

The climate consists of cold winters that are regulated by the west winds from the Atlantic that are increased in temperature by the Gulf Stream, whilst the summers are pleasantly warm. As is the case in Scandinavian countries the days and nights can be remarkably light or dark depending on the time of the year. During the winter months, in the north of the country towards the Arctic circle, the sun remains below the horizon for 51 days at a time, which creates the perpetual night known as kaamos in Finland. Similarly during the summer months, the sun does not set for 73 days producing perpetual light.

Property prices in Finland are reasonable although there is a distinct lack of properties to purchase in the larger cities. Lapland is a popular holiday location and there are numerous developments offering charming log cabins for sale with a strong opportunity for receiving rental income.
